The BBC documentary Krautrock - The Rebirth of Germany provides a captivating look at late 60s-70s German avant rock and the weirdos that made it. Watch it here.

If you can find it, Julian Cope's highly opinionated, out-of-print Krautrocksampler is a must read primer on the topic.
