Ok damn - what a week at SXSW. So many great times were had. Thanks to Prince Klassen and MC for all the hospitality. Some of the best things I saw were: TV on the Radio, Bun B w Erykah Badu, Shabazz Palaces, Cubic Zirconia, Kingdom, The Suzan, Telephoned, Jubilee, Sabo, Bird Peterson and a bunch of other fun shows. Austin is so boss.

This week is Ultra in Miami, so the madness continues. Uh Oh.

Smalltown will be appearing at two parties, first tonight at Bar for Michna & Lsangres Birthday:

Then tomorrow night looks like the funnest thing in history. Mad Decent and Trouble & Bass Present: Jump, Jive & Wail, with Paul Devro, Bosco Delray, Drop the Lime and a bunch of other mates. There will be a bunch of special guests and madness ensuing. OMG double drop!

So see you in Miami - holler at me and we can hit the beach for some weightlifting and rollerskates.

Jackie Shane

The CBC Radio's Inside the Music aired this great feature documentary on the underrated R&B legend, Jackie Shane. Although he was American born, he made a notable contribution to the 1960’s Canadian music scene. Aside from being a seriously talented performer, Jackie attracted attention for his cross-dressing, openly gay ways.

This doc sheds some light on the otherwise very mysterious figure (he doesn’t even have a Wikipedia page!) There are still many unknowns about what happened to Jackie in the end, but he left behind some sick tunes.

Here is the only known footage of Jackie, singing Rufus Thomas’ Walking the Dog.

I just finished reading Street Gang - a bio about Sesame Street and Jim Henson. It brought back so many awesome memories, and reminded me what a genius Jim Henson was. Kids from our generation were so lucky to have a show like that. The music was unbelievable, and it was funny. And the Muppets are the best thing ever. Anyways - I would recommend the book unless you are a sad grinch who hates fun.

Anyone who knows me at all knows what a big In Flagranti fan I am. This was my favourite thing they did all year. The synthwork is aces in this one. Classy.
9. Murphy Jax feat. Mike Dunn (Alden Tyrell rmx)
Solid choon. I never want to mix out. The Legowelt remix is dope, as is the original, but the little acidy flair puts this one on top for me.
8. Bassanovva - Terrordactyl
I love the spooky twinkles and the dino-shrieks in the track. Not to mention the track was done by two of our specialfriends, one Grahmzilla, and the other, Ms. Jess Jubilee.
7. Carte Blanche - Politrix As Usual
The only way you write a riff like that is with a mouse.
6. Hannulelauri - Super Monkey
Cheeky monkey. Cheeky track.
5. Punks Jump Up - Blockhead
I think I looked for this track as hard as anyone when it was the Zongamin remix. So busy and loud, but it works. That steel drum sounding thing is the kicker.
4. Pablo Decoder & Tim Healey - Echoes In My Head (Alex Gopher remix)
I like Alex gopher a lot, so I kind of knew I'd like this before listening, cause his shit is always solid. Listen to the original (it's stinky), and you'll realize that this remix is fucking brilliant. Kind of like a funkier Soulwax. Fuck, did he ever rescue this one.
3. Smalltown Romeo - Party Motion (Malente remix)
Malente is the man. He made a dope remix despite the fact that the vocals were done by me and Smalltown Pete. Sounds good loud. Pitched down tom-tom bassline sounds nice in a club. Germany!!!
2. Dennis Ferrer - Red Room
He had a huge hit last year with "Hey Hey", and I kind of feel like this track is the opposite of all the things that made "Hey Hey" such a hit. Gone are the poppy vocals, big-room proggy percussion, and dramatic builds. Instead, this track sounds like a mushroom trip in a snake pit, with some "Wiccan ex-girlfriend" type on vocals. I like it a lot.
1. Hrdvsion - Captivated Heart
Such a quirky and irreverent track; by far my favourite of the year. Spooky as fuck, that haunting female vocal and plonky piano line do it for me every time. I dig the crackle on the drums, and when the acidy bassline drops midway through, it sets shit off jusssssst right. It's one of those tracks that when you play it, you can count on someone asking you about what it is. Despite being a weird creep, this guy is one of my favourite producers, and I can already *guarantee* that he'll be in my top 10 next year.

So, I gotta post this album I found. It's was done, apparently, by a wealthy socialite from the 50's, or some shit, who really loved music. So much so, that she hired and orchestra to record with as she sung the songs on her (only?) album, aptly titled, "Music To Suffer By". She's got a kitschy, campy, mock-opera style of singing. The vocals are so fucked up, and terrible, to the the point that they stick in your head and haunt you, days later, when you're trying to concentrate on something important. Download the album and play it in it's entirety the next time you have a dinner party, or bbq, and it'll definitely get people talking. I think the best one is "Yo Ho The Crow". It's a spooki. Also, "Rats In My Room" is a good one:

It's always a surprise to people when I tell them about some of my dad's favourite bands. He's consistently been excited about new music since I was a kid (and probably before that even :) So for Coachella this year he and my mum and sister are driving from Phoenix to Palm Springs where they'll have an RV set up right on site at the concert. He declared it to be "the best concert lineup he's ever seen" - and made a mixtape to get them amped up on the drive over to PS. A couple of the tunes were unknown to me, it's a really fresh sounding mix of great new rock music.

SXSW/CRASHED ICE/WMC Megabloggg!

Ok as some of you know every march there are two big music conferences in the US: SXSW in Austin and WMC in Miami. This year we went to both with a trip up to Red Bull's Crashed Ice event in Quebec City in between. It was the weirdest routing ever - but it make for a great couple of weeks. Here is what happened:

The number one thing first thing to do in Austin, Texas is eat mexican food &/or BBQ with Prince Klassen &/or Dj Mel - we got to do both so that was a good sign that the whole trip was going to be ok.

The first night we started off playing with a bunch of Canadian friends of ours at an event called Oh Canada. Bonjay, Grand Analog, Co-op & Hunnicutt, DJ Huggs and Birdapres were all there too. We were all bragging about the gold medal and drinking Rye while saying please and thank you incessantly to everyone we saw.

Then we made the move to Beso Cantina where we played the Gigacrate party with the great crew of Sammy Bananas, Bird Peterson, Apt One & Jayceeoh. Big thanks to Nick at Giagacrate for having us - it was great night to kick things off.

The next day we played with Sammy again in the afternoon at a great skate shop in Austin called Complete. But not without squeezing in some time for BBQ. MMMMMMMMM.

Then it was over to Do it To It 3, Burlesque's annual SXSW shakedown. Burlesque Design are the dons from Minneapolis and they have great taste in music so we knew it would kill. Thanks Mike Davis!

Then Cubic Zirconia blew everyone's faces off - wow they were great. Like Cajmere meets LCD Soundsystem meets Aaliyah.

And that was it for Austin - short and sweet - and we were headed to Quebec City for Crashed Ice. Literally hours after landing I was on a snowmobile in the Quebec forest (I don't look official at all - what a ski-doo nerd):

And Saturday night was the big Crashed Ice event. It's basically a full contact downhill hockey race through the streets of Old Quebec, and a hundred thousand people come to see it. It's like human Nascar in the winter.

We played the big afterparty with Team Canada DJs also Grahmzilla was there so it was great to catch up with those dudes - the club was crazy.

Thanks to Kenny and Pete at Red Bull for having us to the event again. Quebec City is one of Canada's gems - if you haven't been there try to check it out sometime. The old buildings and awesome french people who love maple syrup make it the best time ever. Je Me Souviens!

Au Revoir Quebec, Bonjour Miami.

Miami was a big blur of clubs and beaches and clubs. I remember Toddla T, Jack Beats, Shy FX, & 12th Planet killed it the first night:

So did Camo UFOs - with MC ? on the mic!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Lighta!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Plus I got to meet The Fat Jew - a life goal of mine achieved. He is better than everyone else.

Hanging out with Miche and Jess Jubilee two of my favourite animals. Jess is like a party angel.

Then the next night we played the Stirling Showcase with Ayres, Jubilee, Sammy Bananas, Tittsworth, FK5, Camo UFOs and Neoteric aka the best crew ever. Splack Pack and 2 Live Crew played in the main room too - Miami is crazy!
